Flu is not just a bad cold. For many people it means a week off work, sleepless nights, and a cough that hangs around long after the fever goes. For older adults, pregnant women, and anyone with a long-term condition, it can lead to serious complications.
An annual flu jab is one of the simplest ways to stay well through winter. Here is what you need to know.

Why the Flu Jab Matters
The flu virus changes every year, which is why a new vaccine is needed each season. The jab trains your immune system to recognise this year's strains, so if you do come across the virus, your body reacts faster and the illness is much milder, or avoided entirely.
You cannot catch flu from the vaccine. The jab contains inactivated virus components that cannot cause infection.
Who Should Have It?
The NHS offers free flu jabs to people at higher risk of complications, including adults aged 65 and over, pregnant women, people with long-term health conditions like asthma, diabetes or heart disease, carers, and frontline health and social care workers.
Everyone else can have a private flu jab. If you work with the public, travel a lot, live with someone vulnerable, or just want to avoid a miserable week in bed, it is well worth the small cost.
When to Have It
Flu season in the UK usually runs from October to March. The best time to get vaccinated is in early autumn, from late September to November, so you are protected before the virus starts circulating.
If you missed that window, it is still worth having the jab later in the season. Protection kicks in about two weeks after vaccination.
What to Expect
The appointment takes about 10 minutes. There is a short health check, then the vaccine is given as a quick injection in the upper arm.
Side effects, if you get any, are usually mild: a sore arm for a day, occasionally a slight temperature or tiredness. You can carry on with the rest of your day straight away.
